Black Gold 440 Championship Futurity
UNCLE EDS IDEA
by Danny Camp
Uncle Eds Idea soared to his first stakes victory in the $252,876 Black Gold 440 Championship Futurity at Will Rogers Downs
on Nov. 9.
Ridden by Jose Vega, the 2-year-old sorrel
gelding broke in second from the 4-post and promptly secured his spot in the lead at the first call. He held strong, crossing the wire a neck in front to complete the race in
:21.462 for a career best 110 speed index.
Owned by Robert & Stacey Martin, Uncle Eds Idea pocketed the $101,150 winner’s share of the purse, which boosted his total bankroll to $151,017.
“This is the kindest horse we have ever been around,” said trainer Tammy Johnson. “He always wants to please you. Our owners raised him; he is a super individual. He
doesn’t like to be beat and he seems to know when he doesn’t win.”
When asked about the future, Tammy said, “We are going to give him a little time off then maybe look at the Heritage Derby at Remington Park.”
Robert had this to say about Uncle Eds Idea, “My uncle Ed Martin raised Brigand
Silk, so he knows a good horse when he sees one. Ed came over to my place one day and looked at the two horses I had and their breeding. He said, ‘Son, we are going to Heritage Place and get you a good horse.’ So, in 2010 we went to the sale and he recommended Mystical Eye to me and $17,000 later we had a good mare. She ran decent and then we bred her to Dominyun and, since it was Uncle Ed’s idea, thus the name. My uncle
Ed is 98 years old and he had tears in his eyes in the winner’s circle. He always told me persis- tence pays off. ”
Second fastest qualifier Mr Dillard (Hes Relentless-Quions) was second best under Cody Smith for owner L Hendrix Horses LLC & trainer Sam K. Howard. Fastest qualifier Jess My Hocks (Kiss My Hocks-Jess Charlena) made up ground under the encouragement of Augustin Silva to pocket third place money for owners Tom & Kathleen McNally and trainer Michelle Hurdle. The gelding broke on top from the number 6-post and had to fight off the field. Regular pilot Jimmy Brooks did what he does best, get the money. They held on to cross the wire a neck in front.
Trained by Eddie D. Willis, they completed the 350 yards in :17.594, posting a career best 95 speed index.
The first-place check
of $76,154, boosted his total lifetime earnings to $106,251 for owner/breeder Abel Flores, and he now has a race record of two wins from eight starts.
“If you didn’t see him in his stall, you would never
know he was in the barn,” said Willis. “I
raised this horse and when it came time, there wasn’t much breaking to it. It was just get on and ride off. He is absolutely no trouble at any time. He’s good on the track and in the gates. We’re going to give him a little time off and then ship him to Remington in the spring. The owners are good folks to work with. We’ve been together many years, and Jimmy Brooks rounds out the team.”
Flores bred Cajun King out of Bugs Alive in 75 stakes winner Easydoesitcindy. She ran third in the Black Gold Futurity Championship-RG3 and Oklahoma Derby
and was a finalist in the
Jack Brooks Stakes-RG3. Easydoesitcindy has produced 100% winners from two start- ers. Cajun King is her first stakes winner and top earner.
