OHA Mystery Derby
AS AND JS
by John Moorehouse
Each of the past two victories for As And Js have come in stakes races. The filly most recently triumphed
in the $66,228 Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association
Mystery Derby at Will Rogers Downs on Nov. 11. Owner/trainer Leonardo Alcala had his filly post the
2nd-quickest time in the Oct. 28 trials after finishing 2nd by just a neck to fastest qualifier JC Wild Rose, but there was no catching As And Js in the final. The filly broke well from the 2-gate, led by a head at the 1st call and widened her advantage to a 1-length as she hit the wire.
Ridden by Cesar Gomez, As And Js finished the 350-yard race in :17.549 for a 95 speed index. After winning last year’s Black Gold 350 Futurity-RG3, As And Js had gone 7 straight starts without a victory. This marked her 8th out of the season, and her 3rd career vic- tory in 12 starts. The $26,991 payday pushed her earn- ings to $303,321. The filly was also 2nd in the Retama Park Derby-G3, 3rd in the Oklahoma Bred Derby-RG3, and a finalist in the Oklahoma Bred Futurity-RG2, Jack Brooks Stakes & Mighty Deck Three Stakes.
