FIRST HABITS
by Michael Compton
First Habits sprinted to his first stakes victory in the $92,200 Harley Greene Derby at Indiana Grand on June 1.
Ridden for the first time by Oscar Andrade Jr., First Habits was last away from the 8-post in the 10-horse field, but it didn’t take him long to discover his best stride. He rallied strongly through the lane of the 350-yard event, collaring the early leaders
and forging clear to a 1/2-length lead. He finished strongly to win by 3/4-length over Nacho Binez and jockey Jorge Garcia, who finished second. It was a nose back to third-place finisher Above the Brimm, piloted by Berkley Packer.
In registering the initial stakes win of his career and third win overall, First Habits covered the dis- tance in :18.081, earning an 82 speed index for owner/ breeder Gerardo Corral and trainer Ricardo Martinez. While it was the first time Andrade partnered with First Habits in a race, the Southern California-based rider was familiar with the horse, having broke and trained the horse for Martinez two years earlier.
The $50,710 winner’s share of the purse increased First Habits’ bankroll to $83,432. Corral bred the sorrel gelding in Indiana out of winner Balenciaga.
It was a big night for Martinez, who also
owns and trains runner-up Nacho Binez (Habits Secret-Chikita Espesial). Trainer Randy Smith
sent out the third-place finisher Above The Brimm (Brimmstone-CSC Cinammon Toast), who races for Gordon Timm and Vicki Lundstrum.
Falcon (El Diablo Tres-Southern Honeymoon), Rubys Stone (Brimmstone-Run N Ruby), Nachito Coronel (Habits Secret-Sassy Shaelan), Eyem Your Sixes (Sixes Liaison-Eyem Your Huckleberry), Cruisin the Beach (Escondido Beach-Chicks Sweet Donna), Famous Cucuy (Jazz Be First-Famous Washer) and Dial In Another Win (Doreme Fasolasi Win-Dials Sruttin) completed the order of finish.

by Michael Compton
Tres My Heart proved a worthy odds-on favorite in the $49,040 Indiana Grand Classic, winning the 400-yard dash in powerful fashion on June 1.
Ridden by Edgar Diaz, the four-year-old daugh- ter of Heart Of The Cartel grabbed the lead soon after the start and simply ran her nine rivals off their feet. She stretched her advantage to 1 1/4-lengths in the lane and maintained her daylight lead to the fin- ish, crossing the wire 1-length clear of Sweet 16.
In winning the second stakes race of her career, Tres My Heart stopped the timer in :20.040, earning an 87 speed index for owner Jose Plascencia and trainer Claudio Barraza.
“She runs her heart out,” said Barraza. “We didn’t expect that. She’s such a nice mare. It is a dream come true (to train her). We will bring her back for the Bradford Stakes (July 6).”
The $26,972 winner’s share of the Indiana Grand Classic purse increased her career earnings to $93,487 and improved her record to 8-4(2)-0-2(1).
