            2023 Carville M. Akehurst Memorial

                                Scholarship Recipient

The Carville M. Akehurst Memorial Scholarship is offered to college students from Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Mr. Akehurst was Executive Secretary of the Maryland Nursery and Landscape Association for over 30 years and was one
of the founders of the Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show. Mr. Akehurst was the Executive Vice-President of MANTS for over
30 years. The Carville M. Akehurst Scholarship was established by Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show to honor his memory
and life-long commitment to horticulture. We would like to recognize this year’s Akehurst scholarship recipient, Katelyn
        Wissinger.

Katelyn is a full-time student studying Advanced Horticulture in her second year at
Virginia Western Community College. She has chosen to attend VWCC so that she
can save to go to Virginia Tech for the last two years of college. Katelynn also works
part-time while in school. Some of her career goals are to work in plant production
and sales, growing vegetables and flowers for harvest, designing residential
landscapes, and being involved in agricultural education.

        About Scholarship
The MNLGA and MANTS are proud to make scholarships available as they play a vital role in supporting the future and
future leaders of our industry. Scholarships are important because they provide an opportunity for people to earn
an education, help students have more time to focus on their studies, may support students who fall in the gap
between high and low-income levels, expand students’ networks and are a great addition to student resumes.
For more information on available scholarships or if you know of a candidate who might benefit from one of our
scholarships, please contact Vanessa at vanessa@mnlga.org or 410-823-8684.
