1 Business It was noted that, for government to bring about economic transformation in The Gambia, it

environment must first take the lead in transforming the business environment. Business reforms especially in the

areas of tax administration, land acquisition, as well as legal reforms are the prerequisites for

economic transformation; and this should to be reflected in the economic transformation diagnostic

paper.

The authorities should also improve the ease of doing business as well as provide guarantees

against government interference and the use of excessive regulations to stifle businesses. It should

also eradicate the often-rigid bureaucratic bottlenecks and show more seriousness in fighting official

corruption especially with respect to government officials demanding palm greasing (i.e. asking for
