bribes) before rendering services that they were, in fact, employed to deliver. There is a need to
expedite the passing of the anti-corruption bill tabled at the National Assembly.
Participants stressed the importance of digitalization of the economy and e-ommerce to increase the Gambia’s
competitiveness at regional and global levels. Further, digital transformation is required to improve the business
environment and improve efficiency at multiple levels e.g.. ports, the tax collection mechanism, healthcare and
other government services.
2 Development Private sector representative recommended to reduce reliance on government in their delivery
partners of development assistance. This apparent overreliance on government and the concomitant
underutilization of non-state actors who are hitherto closer to the targeted beneficiaries of
development assistance was identified as a major setback in the realization of the much-desired
economic transformation. Thus, bilateral and multilateral partners are urged to prioritize the use of
non-state actors in rolling out development assistance with a view to leveraging on their efficiency,
their proximity to target beneficiaries and to minimize bureaucracy.
Private sector representatives mentioned matching grants and co-investment as effective
channels to spur private-sector led growth.
