Responsibility Strategies
Strategies for gauging
Encourage students to gauge how, where, and when they best learn. Provide
students with alternative ways of learning and encourage them to choose a
few. Give them a free ‘pass’ for one or more missed classes if they engage
with the required material by watching a documentary, going to a museum, or
performing an experiment.
Have students design one or more of their assignments. Provide guidelines
based on your learning outcomes for the assignment and work with the
student to negotiate a grading rubric.
When possible, let students negotiate an altered timeline for submitting one
or more assignments.
Strategies for engaging
Create a culture of independence. Involve students in all aspects of their
education having them prepare a learning plan that includes a timeline for
completion of tasks. Have regular ‘check-ins’ to hold students accountable to
their plan and help them revise it, if necessary.
Build strategies for learning into each activity and assignment. Create a
culture of independence. When asking students to submit a research paper
using peer-reviewed sources, provide them with a set of questions such as:
How do you intend to find peer-reviewed sources? Who would be the best
person to assist you in your search? What are your criteria for choosing strong
sources?
