Content Strategies
Strategies for gauging
Provide students with the question and have them find the answers. Consider
letting them each choose an academic source as one of their required readings
each week. Provide them with strategies for assessing knowledge claims in
advance.
Provide students with opportunities to evaluate critically their prior knowledge
in light of what they are learning in the classroom. This might take the form of
open classroom discussions or reflective journaling exchanges where your
feedback takes the form of new questions or ideas they can explore.
Strategies for engaging
Make space in the classroom for co-learning. Group discussions or collaborative
worksheets can help stronger students learn through teaching and weaker
students to learn from peers. Give a ‘quiz’ but allow students two minutes in
which they can change their answers after consulting with a classmate.
Allow students to engage with content in multiple ways and settings. Record
key parts of your lecture and allow students to access it outside of class time.
Allow time for discussion during class and outside of it. Allow students to meet
with you and discuss their answers on an exam. You may find that they know
more than they were able to communicate during the exam.
