The Balance of Power
The first principle that
guides learner-centered
teaching is to evaluate
the balance of power.
You have probably been
in, and maybe even
taught in, classrooms
where the teacher,
instructor, or professor
maintains (or attempts
to) a tight grip on power
and control over the classroom. Many educations learn either formally or
informally, that they must maintain control and authority in order to be
successful in the classroom. However, when we teach from a position of
absolute power, we create learners who feel, and sometimes are,
powerless. Learner-centered teaching is about shifting that power so that
students can be empowered learners.
