Assessment and Agency
According to Weimer (2002), evaluation is often detached from the learning process.
Instructors often regard evaluation as outside of ‘teaching’. Assessment, then,
simply measures the degree to which learning has taken place. Weiner suggests that
this approach to evaluation is limited. Instead of viewing evaluation as only a tool
for generating grades, educator should also consider how it might promote learning.
Additionally, she contends that
evaluation should not solely be the
domain of the instructor. Instead,
educators should teach students to
assess their own work, as well as
the work of others. In short,
evaluation should be used to
engage students’ learning, as well
as to help them learn to assess
their own (and their classmates’)
learning.
