A. International Council for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF)
ICRAF was established in 1977. It was established as an
international scientific Centre devoted to improving the nutritional,
economic and social well-being of people in developing countries by
promoting agroforestry system for enhanced use of the land without
degrading the environment.
ICRAF acts as a catalyst for agroforestry research, training and
information dissemination.
ICRAF is located in Nairobi, Kenya as the headquarters for
agroforestry research activities.
Kenya straddles the equator on Africa’s eastern coast,
extending west to Lake Victoria and East to the Indian Ocean. Kenya
borders Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Somalia.
Kenya is known for its highly diverse landscape and climate, which
range from warm, tropical conditions around the Indian Ocean and
Lake Victoria to semi-arid to arid savannahs and deserts hosting
world-famous nature reserves; to snow-caps on Mount Kenya’s peaks.
It is home to many world heritage sites, including the Cradle of
Mankind within the Great Rift Valley. This geographical diversity is
accompanied by an equally stunning array of biological diversity,
peoples and cultures.
The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is one of the 15 Centers
of the CGIAR Consortium. The organization has eight regional and
sub-regional offices located in China, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malawi,
Mali, Peru and Cameroon. We conduct research in 28 other countries
in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
The vision of ICRAF is a rural transformation in the developing
world as smallholder households increase their use of trees in
