CHAPTER I
Elements of Experimentation
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson you should be able to
1. Explain how experimental error could be measured by replication and
randomization
2. Discuss how experimental error is controlled by means of blocking,
proper plot techniques and data analysis.
3. Identify the limitations in the interpretation of experimental results.
LESSON 1. INTRODUCTION
What is STATISTICS?
Statistics is the study of the collection, organization, analysis,
interpretation, and presentation of data. It deals with all aspects of
this, including the planning of data collection in terms of the design
whether surveys or experiments.
What is an STATISTICIAN?
A Statistician is someone who is particularly knowledgeable and well
versed in the ways of thinking necessary for the successful
application of statistical analysis. Such people have often gained
this experience through working on several researches in different
fields. .
1950’s –
o There was a rice shortage in the country
o A Filipino Journalist decided to test yield potential of existing
rice cultivars to increase yield of farmers
o How he conducted the field test:
Land preparation - Plot was well prepared
Planting - Planted a single rice seed from an ordinary
farm
Care and management : Carefully nurtured the plant to
maturity, fertilizer application, weeding, pest control
Harvesting:
Counted more than 1000 seeds produced by the
single plant
CONCLUSION:
Flipino farmers who sow 50kg of seeds to plant per
hectare could harvest 50 tons/ha. Instead of only
1.2 tons/ha.
