Agricultural research - seeks answers to key questions in
agricultural production ( just like the research conducted by the
Filipino journalist)
FINDINGS of the research could lead to significant changes and
improvement to existing practices of farmers.
Statement of Hypothesis -
o Expression of the key questions in agricultural research that
has to be verified or disproved thru experimentation.
o These are based on past experiences, observations and
theoretical considerations.
o Example 1;
The Filipino journalist impressed by the high yield in some
rice farms thought of planting it by himself in his farm
because he visualized that he could still increase the yield
by application of modern, scientific farming methods.
He believes that the yield of the farmers is still low and he
could still increase it by better farming methods.
o Example 2:
Low adoption rate of New high yielding Hybrid corn in
Mindanao: A Filipino maize breeder observed that the
hybrids are more vigorous and productive than the native
varieties. In disease free areas but in fields infested with
downy mildew hybrids are severely diseased than the
native varieties.
Hypothesis: his hypothesis was that the hybrids are not
widely accepted because they are more susceptible to
downy mildew than the native varieties.
THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
o rice removes more nitrogen than it can replenish during the
growing season
o Thus one’s hypothesis should be to maintain high productivity
level in any farm, supplementary nitrogen must be added to
every crop.
o After a hypothesis is framed: next step is to design a procedure
for its verification.
The PROCEDURE IS as follows:
1. Select the appropriate materials to test
2. Specify the characters to be measured
3. Select the procedure to measure those characters
4. Specify the procedure to determine whether the
measurements made support the hypothesis.
