Part I: Preface

                               Comprehensive research: what makes companies more
                               successful at all times

                               At SCHEELEN® AG, as a holistic consulting company, we have been
                               asking ourselves for decades what makes and keeps companies
                               successful  in good times and in times of  crisis.  I have already
                               published and written  many books on  this subject  - some with
                               international  leadership and management  experts  such as Jack
                               Zen- ger and Joe Folkman or Brian Tracy, because the challenges of
                               globalization, digitalization, disrupted supply chains and the
                               shortage of skilled workers, demographic as well as socio-political
                               aggravations pose major challenges to companies almost worldwide.
                                  In 2021, we looked at the question of what really makes people
                               tick  in publications  - and now, as  a  kind  of continuation, we are
                               examining the other  way round from the  perspective  of  what
                               companies really need. More precisely: What companies really need
                               to get through these volatile times together with the people on board
                               and to secure a certain  basic resilience. Of course, when supply
                               chains break, energy costs eat up profits  and destroy  margins,
                               blackouts paralyze production lines, or hacker attacks cause serious
                               data leaks,  it's a  matter of taking ad hoc  measures to ensure the
                               survival of the  "company" organism in  the  short term. But  this
                               organism is the people who work in it. They believe in an idea and, in
                               the best case scenario, find meaning and - perhaps not fulfillment -
                               but self-efficacy as well as  attention  and recognition in their  work.
                               They  must be equipped with the right competencies, skills and
                               abilities, resources and resilience. There must be a match between
                               challenges, opportunities, knowledge and skills. To achieve this - and
                               this is what this book will also be about - we naturally use the well-
