OF EMPLOYEES
Understanding the behavioral and motivational styles of your em-
ployees provides insights into their unique skills, strengths, and
challenges. As a manager, this knowledge enables you to address
each employee’s needs on an individual basis.
Consider an example where you manage a highly assertive (red)
employee:
Reflect on how this understanding will transform your man-
agement of a distributed team. Determine who needs regular
interaction and who thrives with minimal check-ins. Consider
who must be involved in decision-making processes.
Approach this in three steps, applying the following guidance:
Step 1: Understand behavioral styles. Delve deeply into the
characteristics and behaviors of the assertive employee using
the descriptions you’ve learned. An assertive employee tends to
receive feedback well, viewing it objectively rather than as a per-
sonal attack, thanks to their self-confidence. They focus on facts
and tasks, are committed to their profession, and keep abreast of
