MOTIVATING EMPLOYEES AND TEAMS TO ACHIEVE . . .
ASSEMBLE A HIGH-PERFORMING TEAM
The varied personalities within a team often act as a strength because
diversity brings a balance of skills and approaches. For instance,
a team composed entirely of six aggressive and direct salespeople
might struggle with collaboration, as each member may vie for lead-
ership. Conversely, a group where every member is an innovative
and outgoing individual may generate endless ideas but face chal-
lenges in execution due to a potential lack of focus on implementa-
tion. Hence, a mix of different behavioral styles can create a more
harmonious and effective team dynamic, allowing for both idea
generation and practical application.
On the Benefits of Inequality
The diversity of individual skills, motivations, attitudes, and behav-
iors is what enables the assembly of a well-functioning team. A ho-
mogeneous group, whether composed entirely of assertive leaders,
meticulous auditors, or cautious guardians, tends to be less effective
over time. The key to a successful team lies in striking the right bal-
ance among its members.
Diversity tends to energize and enhance a team’s dynamic. Assigning
tasks that align with each member’s unique behavioral tendencies
and strengths allows for a distribution of competencies where each
person’s attributes complement those of the others. Following the
principle of complementarity, the varied skills and strengths of the
team members interlock like cogs in a well-oiled machine. This con-
cept is particularly effective in a sales environment, where a wide
range of roles and abilities are crucial for achieving collective success.
