THE BENEFITS OF SELF-KNOWLEDGE
Key Point: We All Have the Capacity to Learn and Change
The human brain has a remarkable capacity for learning and
adapting. Understanding your behavioral traits deeply offers
the flexibility to modify them, especially when interacting
with job candidates, customers, or colleagues, to better match
their communication styles. We are not bound by our genetic
makeup or ingrained characteristics; we have the ability to
change. The often-heard refrain, “That’s just how I am—I can’t
change,” is not a valid excuse. In fact, it’s possibly one of the
least helpful responses one can provide.
Psychological research suggests that our personalities and behavior
are malleable, subject to change through external factors, internal
shifts, and personal experiences. Most theories on personality de-
velopment agree that humans experience various stages of change
throughout their lives. Learning from experiences is crucial when
facing life’s challenges and progressing. As Ballier and Wendel suc-
cinctly put it, our potential is like a vast set of Lego bricks, available
in countless combinations. How a person chooses to use and com-
bine those bricks varies greatly, influenced by their background, en-
vironment, relationships, experiences, and personal choices (Ballier
and Wendel, 2010, p. 17).
