known as the “halo effect.” This cognitive bias suggests that our
overall impression of a person can be influenced by our subjective
evaluations of them, often based on a single trait. For instance, at-
tractive individuals may benefit from an assumption of positivity,
where their appeal casts a favorable light on their other, perhaps
unknown, attributes.
This effect isn’t just limited to physical attractiveness. Any notable
trait, be it a disability, an outstanding achievement, or even a friendly
demeanor, can result in a more sympathetic perception overall. It’s
an unconscious distortion in our judgment, leading us to a biased
conclusion that extends a kind of halo around the individual.
Thus, those who are perceived as likable have a greater ability to
sway others. Compliments, in particular, can enhance likability
and, consequently, increase the likelihood that the person will re-
spond positively to requests or suggestions. Understanding this
can be a powerful tool in creating rapport and facilitating coopera-
tive exchanges.

While you may find an instant connection with some individuals,
feeling as if you’ve met a kindred spirit, it’s helpful to understand
where this sense of sympathy comes from. The word itself, with roots
