SOLAR ENERGY EXPERIENCE
DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL SOLAR ARRAY
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School Solar Array project, built for Reliant
Energy Charitable Foundation, included the new construction of a 100 kilowatt photovoltaic
solar array located in New Orleans, Louisiana. The facility supports 798 students in Pre-
Kindergarten through 12th grade. The photovoltaic solar array was constructed on a
cast-in-place concrete foundation with a structural steel frame. The project also featured
397 solar panels mounted on shade structures, playground upgrades, and an outdoor
educational classroom in a garden area with an irrigation system designed to redistribute
reclaimed water, electrical fans, and a drinking fountain. Due to CORE’s construction
support efforts, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School Solar Array project now
provides one-third of the school’s electrical power and offers a unique energy efficient
educational opportunity to the community in an urban environment.
