The burrowing owl lives in open grasslands, in South America.
Apart from the snowy owl, it is the only owl that nests on the ground.
Once a nest has been established, the male burrowing owl goes off
and finds fresh manure - from cattle, or bison.
He uses his talons to carry this stuff back to his burrow, and then he
places it carefully around the entrance, and down the entrance a
              short distance.
Why would an owl collect manure?
Because the smelly manure attracts insects, which the owl then
catches and eats or feeds to his young.

Studies have shown that 'adding manure to the front door' can
bring in up to TEN TIMES the food - mainly beetles - for the owl
             family.

How could an owl work out that fresh manure attracts insects,
therefore its good to have it round the entrance?
If the owl learned this, who taught it?
Why do all burrowing owls know about the manure/insect link?

Most likely God, who made the owls,
built the wisdom and the skill into them.
