Chapter Four

Nearly There

After school that day Jeremiah got home as usual, changed, had a

snack, and went to his bedroom, where he spent quite a lot of time

setting up his Imagining Cards. This was one of his favorite games. He

had made 300 cards and on each card he had written a word or a location

or an action. He would shuffle the cards and then select four or five or

six at random, and make up a story that connected each card. He never

knew what cards he would pick, so he had to make up a different story

each time.

Today’s story was about a CHICKEN who ran away from HOME,

wearing a BRIGHT RED SCARF, and on the way through some

GLOOMY MOUNTAINS the chicken had discovered a FOUNTAIN

made entirely of CHEESE. It could have been a story about a CHEESE

that ran away from HOME and found a fountain made entirely of

CHICKENS but the cards had come in a different order so that was how

the story went this time.

Jeremiah put his cards down and looked out at the gathering shadows

of the evening. From where he sat, on his bed, he could see the fence,
