Chapter Five
The Three Wishes
Friday came and school was much the same as ever. Mrs. MacCreadle
threatened to read another story, and the class begged her to because it
was a good way to idle away school time while she droned. Like art
lessons, most of the class could see almost no point to some of the things
they did, except for Jeremiah. He loved stories.
“Today,” said the teacher, “I want to read the story of The Three
Wishes.”
The class settled and waited for the story to begin. Jeremiah was
already on his way to watch.
“Once there was a poor woodcutter, who lived in a cottage beside a
large forest with his wife…”
Jeremiah walked through the forest and there, in a little clearing, was
the cottage. He looked at it from around the side of a tree. Inside he
could see a woman, sweeping the floor.
Jeremiah ran into the forest and soon, in the distance, he saw a man
chopping a tree.
Mrs. MacCredle turned the page and continued to read.
