“How dare you make me stop talking!” she shouted, “And what a
waste of two wishes! Now you have only one left and there are so many
things we need!”
“I could wish for everlasting money?”
“But what use is money if we are sick? Wish for everlasting health!”
“What use is health if we have no money to buy food?”
“You fool of a husband!” said Elsa, starting to strike him with her
hand. Slap! Slap! Poor Max had to cover his head as he ducked and
dodged to avoid the reign of blows.
“I wish!” cried Max, as he crawled under the table, “I wish, I wish…
we could eat ANYTHING!”
Elsa stopped swishing the broom about.
“You what?” she said, faintly.

hungry ever again!”
“Anything?” said Elsa.
“Well, I suppose so,” said Max, “I think anything means anything.
Why don’t you try something? How about that broom you’re holding?”
Elsa cautiously tried the broom handle with her teeth. There was a
crunching sound, like a potato crisp being crushed and she chewed for a
while, then she smiled.
“Mmmmm, not bad! A little dry… could do with a bit of salt… but
