Chapter Six
Three Goats
That night, Friday, Jeremiah was determined to have a look at the
concrete house across the road. He waited and watched, and tried not to
look like he was waiting or watching, until finally the moment arrived.
Mum started to clean the oven, dad was tinkering with his car in the
garage, the dishes were actually DONE this time, and the TV was on
nice and loud. This was the perfect moment to grab the torch and head
across the road.
Jeremiah made it to the path, walked casually towards the doorway,
and half-expected to hear his mother call, but she didn’t. He stepped
through the concrete rectangle and into the gloom of the building. Mr.
Flannel had driven away with yet another load some time ago, and he
usually took an hour before returning, so Jeremiah expected that he had
plenty of time to explore.
He walked straight in, through the gaping concrete frame, and
followed a track across the floor which the wheelbarrow had made. It
was bumpy, and consisted of clay bits that had been dropped and spilled
