Chapter Seven
Getting the dirt.
The next day Jeremiah went for a walk. His mother was not in the
slightest bit concerned by this because he often went for walks, and
whenever he did he always came across many interesting things. He
would go past hundreds of ordinary front gardens and look over the
walls and fences for strange flowers, or amazing spider webs, or
secretive little plants that were odd shapes and curious designs. He saw
luscious leaves, and magical stones, mysterious mosses and colorful
lichens, brown stains, red rusts, and marvelous molds. There were no
dull gardens as far as Jeremiah was concerned; it was just the people
who owned them who had become dull. Nature was always buzzing and
bursting and popping with interest.
But there was another reason for the walk this particular day. Jeremiah
wanted to see where Mr. Flannel took all the dirt from his secret
diggings.
He walked up the road for a while, then cut through some houses on a
sealed path and onto another road. From here he went up some very
steep steps, and stopped for a breather at the top. Below him he could
