Chapter Eight
Something From Space.
Jeremiah was amazed at what he saw behind the door. Mr. Flannel
flung it open and waved his hand at the opening.
“So… what do you think?”
Jeremiah didn’t know what to think. The door opened to a tunnel, with
smooth sides chopped evenly and a smooth floor, and lights fixed at
evenly spaced points along the ceiling. Along the floor on one side was a
pipe which came up to an open end about as high as a wheelbarrow. It
was a wide tunnel, with plenty of room to spread his arms.
Mr. Flannel started to walk along the tunnel, talking as he went.
“Don’t be afraid!” he was saying, “Clay is solid stuff. Can’t cave in.
Like concrete! Very stable.”
Jeremiah walked cautiously at first, but soon speeded up because he
was being left behind. He had to run eventually, because Mr. Flannel
wasn’t stopping. He ran along the even, flat floor, as it went deeper and
deeper into the hill. Minutes passed and still the tunnel continued, until
at last it came to a room with clay walls. There was a small table, a
chair, a bed, some cupboards and a few boxes.
