“You don’t believe me do you?” said Mr. Flannel, “Tell you what, as
soon as I finish this load, I’ll take you home and show you what I’ve
been doing… but it HAS to be a secret, right?”
“Right,” agreed Jeremiah.
There was a spare shovel in the cab of the truck, so Jeremiah grabbed
it and worked with the man for the next half an hour, and so the truck
was empty again, then the bike was put on board and they drove slowly
back to the house. On the way Mr. Flannel explained his background in
astronomy and communications, and how he had built his own orbiting
telescope and receiver. His work had led to the discovery of the Floobles
and their occupation, and, knowing that nobody would believe him, he
had started work on his own measures to avoid the meat-harvesting
habits of this trans-galactic species.
They crawled up the road and parked under the unloading board.
Jeremiah followed Mr. Flannel up the wheel barrow track into the house
and waited for the door to open after the password was spoken. They
stepped into an empty room, with concrete walls, and waited for the first
door to shut, then Mr. Flannel went to the second door and flicked a
light switch.
“Welcome to my labyrinth!” he said with a laugh, “I bet you’ve never
seen anything like this before!”
