“His name is Jeremiah. I met him in the forest… but anyway, guess
what happened?”
“I wish you wouldn’t bring strangers home!” said Elsa, “We don’t
have much food.”
“Yes, yes,” said Max, “I couldn’t just leave him in the forest could I?
He’s just a kid. His parents might be looking for him.”
“They’re not” said Jeremiah.
“What funny clothes he’s got on!” said Elsa.
Jeremiah had forgotten to imagine himself in the sort of clothing
people wore in stories like this.
“Oops, sorry!” he said, “This is, er, a special costume…. For the…er,
Morris dancing festival in the village green…”
“Max was becoming quite agitated by now.
“I DO wish you’d stop talking!” he said.
Instantly his wife stopped talking. Her mouth shut and she could only
make sounds like someone trying to talk but with their mouth shut.
“Thank you,” said Max, “Well, I had the greatest of luck out there in
the forest today. I saw a fairy, and she gave me three wishes!”
“I’m sorry to say this but you have only two left,” said Jeremiah.
“Two?” said Max, then he realized what had happened.
“I’m terribly sorry my dear,” he said, “I wish you could talk again!”
Elsa told him off angrily.
