Who is Actually Alive?
OK, so many will tell you that anyone living and breathing
is completely alive and not dead. I would argue that just
because you walk around this earth, you are not truly living
a life, at least the way it was meant to be lived. If you
ignore the hard work and inconvenience of seeking spiritual
growth, you are not really living. Folks that are ignoring or
running from our most important job here on earth will live
and die without making any significant difference, and that
is not just a waste of human life, it is tragic.
So how do people accomplish this disappearing act? Please
understand that I am not trying to disparage here, just
trying to point out the indicators of folks who are
needlessly wasting their lives away. We have to be aware
so that we do not fall into these situations ourselves, and
also so we can guide our children and other close
acquaintances away from wasting time pursuing the
insignificant.
You might know some of these folks already. They simply
do not want to, or at least they think they don't want to,
participate in anyone's spiritual growth, not even their own.
But they are often quite busy. They pursue superficial
pleasures exclusively, and ignore the deeper pleasures,
often because they take s much work to attain. All through
these writings I have been referring to the hard work we
have to do to experience true enlightenment. To some
people, it is not just the hard work but for some reason it is
so profoundly unpalatable to them that they anesthetize
themselves with the blind pursuit of money, material things,
social status and popular glory, finding so many ways to
proclaim themselves the true "winners" in life, demonstrate
their superiority over everyone else and publicly display at
