So what are those deep, significant pleasures? As I
mentioned, they happen when we succeed at doing our job
in life. These are pleasures derived from true
accomplishment. Falling deeply in love and sharing in
personal growth with another human being for a lifetime is
deep pleasure. Any time you truly make someone's —
anyone's — life better through participating in their
spiritual growth will provide deep pleasure. Doing
something for the community which serves to help many
people will result in deep pleasure. It's true that people are
often so focused on the more superficial pleasures, that
these deeper ones can be hard to detect. So work must be
done.
The ultimate significance to all this is that once you
understand these distinctions, you can not only tune
yourself into them and experience them more deeply,
appreciating them all the more as you go, but also should
never again feel a need to pursue pleasures that are born of
other's misfortune, making the world, and the entire
universe an instantly better place forever. The bottom line
is that there are plenty of ways out there to feel good that
not only don't hurt other people, but actually help other
people! It's a win-win-win and worth every effort to make
it happen.
