F
orest clearing in the last five decades has changed most of the green areas
of Lampung , the southern tip of Sumatra, to other land-uses such as
plantations and residencial areas (Syam et al., 1997; Salam et at.,1998d).
The clearing and conversion continue since the early of transmigration
program and were intensified by the current situation particularly by the
population and economical pressures. Forest clearing occurs not only in the upper
terraces of Lampung, but initially occurs in the middle terraces in which we can find
big and modern plantations owned by both private and government institutions.
The forest clearing changed not only the land-use system but also the soil
chemical, physical, and biological properties. Along with land degradation, the soil
