A lack of cohension among ebook retailers, along with the issue of applying Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection to files, means there is still no easy way to gift ebooks in the UK.There’s the age-old method of buying a gift card and hoping that people will redeem it against your ebook, but most of the big e-retailers allow options that are less of a gamble and are specific to your ebook.
To gift an Amazon ebook (UK and America only), log in to your Amazon account, go to the Amazon product page and click on the ‘Give as a Gift’ button (US) or select how many copies you’d like to buy under the ‘Buy for others’ heading (UK). You’ll then be asked to confirm your payment details and enter the email address associated with the recipient’s Amazon account. An email will then be sent to them with instructions on how to access their copy. Please note that copies purchased on Amazon.com can only be gifted to customers in the US, and those purchased on Amazon.co.uk in the UK
It works similarly on Nook, except you locate your eBook and click ‘Buy as gift’, or you can click ‘LendMe’ to lend ebooks amongst other Nook readers with whom you’re connected.The complication is that Nook UK accounts have migrated, so anyone who held a UK account is no longer, technically, a Nook customer... Which makes this more applicable to overseas recipients.
Gifting on Google Play works as above, except that ebooks must be gifted between Android compatible devices.
Alternatively, from $25 for three months, this is a unique way to share your ebook with others, while giving the gift of an ebook subscription service.
