5. Price promotions and drops
While many authors opt for a free or cut-price promotion on their ebook for limited periods, most authors actually want to see some return from sales and our standard pricing is around £3.99 for a fiction book and higher for non-fiction.This price point still falls into the ‘attractively’ priced ebook margins and also allows us to do targeted price drops on the title for set periods.
While price promotions are a great way to get more sales, you have to actually let readers know the price has dropped, otherwise the ebook will be lost in a sea of other price-dropped ebooks – any price dropping is a great opportunity for you to email (or recontact) people about your ebook and announce the lower price on social media sites. The best way to do this is to ask the Matador ebook team to drop the price on your ebook for a set period with some retailers, and then plan a short marketing campaign around the price drop to push potential readers to the price dropped site.
Some retailers select free and price-dropped titles to push to their customers in their storefront merchandising, though this is entirely their decision and is outside our control. Price drop promotions work best when combined with a relevant topical event, anniversary, news story or similar. If something relevant is mentioned on a website, or there’s an event coming up that’s even loosely relevant to the themes in your ebook, get in touch and suggest it to us. We’ll see what we can do!
For authors writing a series or looking to create an author brand, reducing the price of your older titles when you release a new ebook can really help to drive sales of your back catalogue.
We can arrange price drops for authors for no charge. We simply need to know the promotion start and end dates, along with the temporary, reduced price.
