Deeply worried about the
horrific events unfolding in
Europe, Albert and another
German-Jewish physicist, Leo
Szilard, sent a letter to then-
US president Franklin D.
Roosevelt. In the letter, they
warned Roosevelt that Hitler was Leo Szilard
working with scientists who supported Nazism
to develop an atomic bomb. This was now
possible because of the recent discovery of
nuclear fission—a process during which an
atom releases huge amounts of energy after
being split.
