The Manhattan Project grew into one
of the most important military developments
in history. It was supported not only by the US
government, but also by Great Britain and
Canada. With only a few dozen workers at
the beginning, it had more than 125,000 at the
end. It also used the talents of some of the most
respected scientists of the day, including
Enrico Fermi, Richard Feynman, and J. Robert
Oppenheimer. Albert, however, was not part
of it. Because he was a pacifist, the government
did not want to give him information about it.
In fact, the project was
conducted in such
secrecy that Albert
never even knew
about it—until
August 1945,
that is.
