GIT'T OF GOLD 85
The total, 1,990 Dutch florins, equalled 3,980 francs,
a third greater than the amount Father Van Beek in
       his haste had estimated.
Of this unique happening, Brother Ignatius Melis
after writing of the famine days and the particular
difficulty in rising at night to pray, has this ro say:
"Relief came in a wonderful manner. In Holland lived
a friend of the Founder, the Reverend Martin Van Beek,
superintendent and founder of a certain method of in-
struction for the Deaf and Dumb . . .
"On a certain day an unknown person carrying a box
said to the gardener: 'This is intended for the promotion
       of some foreign mission.'
"The gardner oftered to take it to Rev. Father which
was agreed on. On being opened, it showed to contain
       about eighty pounds in gold.
"On the gardener's return, he found the person gone.
As we were preparing for the American Mission, the
money was sent to us and was later used to pay our
       expenses for the journey."lo
