Countess, your wife. I took advantage of the occa-
sion to say to her a word about our Congregation.
I left with her our prospectus and a picture of our
         institution.
Unfortunately I was not able to explain suffi-
ciently well because I have only a limited command
of French. I hope to do better soon after a study of
         the language.

It was Count de Biolley's daughter, Marie, who by a
personal appeal to King William in the days preceding
the separation of Holland and Belgium had obtained
the royal permission for the Si$ters of Notre Dame o[
Namur to teach in a school she had established. When
Belgium was once again independent, she had given
       the property to the Sisters.

almost ready and asked for a special prayer that Bishop
Boussen might be moved to grant the Brothers pei-
mission to wear the three-cornered hat.
A short time later Ryken visited the Van Beek In-
stitute. Back in Bruges he wrote to Van den Boorn's
       rnother.
         My dear Madame:
I am happy to write you of the excellent condi-
tion in which I found your son Michael ar rhe fn-
stitute of St. Michelsgestel at Halder.
He is making marvelous progress in his study
of the method of teaching Deaf-Mutes. I was
astounded. He is perfectly happy. Some days ago
I visited him and brought him his religious habit,
