Countess, your wife. I took advantage of the occa-
sion to say to her a word about our Congregation.
I left with her our prospectus and a picture of our
institution.
Unfortunately I was not able to explain suffi-
ciently well because I have only a limited command
of French. I hope to do better soon after a study of
the language.
It was Count de Biolley's daughter, Marie, who by a
personal appeal to King William in the days preceding
the separation of Holland and Belgium had obtained
the royal permission for the Si$ters of Notre Dame o[
Namur to teach in a school she had established. When
Belgium was once again independent, she had given
the property to the Sisters.
Somehow Mr. Ryken procured the necessary cloth.
On October 10, he wrote Tomballe and Van den Boorn
at Halder in North Brabant that their habits were
almost ready and asked for a special prayer that Bishop
Boussen might be moved to grant the Brothers pei-
mission to wear the three-cornered hat.
A short time later Ryken visited the Van Beek In-
stitute. Back in Bruges he wrote to Van den Boorn's
rnother.

He is making marvelous progress in his study
