he largest few obstacles that many people throw in front of
themselves when considering the start of a vehicle build are
the “lack of tools,” “lack of garage,” “lack of knowledge,” or
T“lack of money.” Well, i am here to debunk that mythical list
and get some of you fellow ratrodders motivated to start turning
wrenches and building dreams.
Let me say this right off the bat; as a u tape Measure
100% backyard mechanic i have never had u WD-40 & small propane torch
any formal training. i also do not have a (Loosening rusty bolts)
shop full of snap on tools at my disposal u Pneumatic Angle Grinder
or a bottomless bank account. i can tell (Multipurpose tool that can be used
you that it is definitely challenging at with cutoff disks, grinding pads, wire
times, but there are a few tips & tricks to brush, dremel bits, etc.)
doing some things Diy style, of which you u Check out empire abrasives products
may or may not have considered. (Better value than 3M products)
u A few different sized “Visegrips”
Tools u safety glasses, gloves, etc.
First i will go over some of the most u Wire strippers/crimpers
esseNtiAL tools that you must have before u Bench top Vise
building a rat rod (this is not a complete list, u railroad tie or similar to shape metal
but rather a list of affordable items i most around (if it’s free, heavy and has
often use): some nice shapes it’ll work!)
u electric drill w/bit set
Essentials: u Welder (Obviously a 220v mig is
u hammer, chisel, pry-bar, center ideal, but i have built entire cars
punch, tin snips using a 110v mig)
u Wrench set & 3/8” ratchet set u Welding helmet (Automatic speed
(metric & standard) lens style is very convenient to have
u Various screwdrivers & plyers as a luxury)
