Between brushes with death, I was able to see
two prime examples of the car culture in Texas.
One is a stitched up sultry survivor, the other a
resto-modded sinister sleeper. The fi rst was Jerad
and Bolin’s “PENNYWISE” 1954 Chevy 210 sedan
survivor. He rescued it from Ada, Oklahoma after
a hard life. It is close to stock and has only ever
known old bias ply wide white walls, no modern
tires ever. She was cleaned up, tightened up and is
now a daily driver. The only modern convenience
is a pair of hand formed tail light lenses made by
the legend Gene Winfi eld himself!!!
The sleeper is known as Slave 1, because of
it’s resemblance to Boba Fett’s ship. The builder
is a Star Wars nut, and all around swell fella Mark
Whiteskunk. He built this ’53 Chevy 210 sedan in
12 weeks for LSRU, but didn’t skimp. He swapped
in a modern Vortec 350/4L60E, ceramic coated
headers and a Blazer 4x4 diff. A custom made fi rewall was necessary as well as modern rack and
pinion steering. The entire inside was recovered in green ultra-leather, new carpet and dash painted
while raising the tunnel. The rear tubs were raised and widened to accommodate the big beautiful
20 inch Detroit steelies. The car lays out completely thanks to rear two links while Mustang II drop
spindles, tube control arms mounted with 2500# airbags. The outside fi nish was crafted by Mother
Nature with a beautiful brown patina on the original green paint.
