Covers that never were

Our cover creation and selection
process here at the magazine is
fairly straight forward; we take
material from that particular issue
and whip up some different designs,
and then vote on them. The voting
process is followed by revisions (we’ll
sometimes create up to 20 versions
of the same cover) and then some
more voting… until we have “the one.”
In all that cover-creating-chaos, many
cover design ideas are scrapped.
Some right away, some deeper into
the process. Every once in a while,
we like to run this “covers that never
were” segment and look back at
some of the unused designs and
wonder…. What if.

Some of these cover ideas were rough sketches and unfi nished designs from early in the process. We hope you have
fun seeing that raw stage of cover design, and can excuse the sometimes unedited and incomplete work.
