The original motor was supposed to be a big-block
Chevy, backed by a Turbo 350. Most people would agree
that would be a great choice, especially in a vehicle this
light. But a friend reminded Roy that he had a ’57 392
Chrysler Hemi in his garage. Isn’t the rule something like,
‘If you have a Hemi, it belongs in a car and shouldn’t be
lying in pieces in your garage?” Roy changed course and
began to reassemble the legendary powerplant. He kept
the Turbo 350 and added aftermarket pistons and an
Isky cam to liven things up a bit. It was almost too much,
according to Roy. “I thought I may have put too big of
a cam in it. I thought it was going to die the fi rst time
I got it running.” There’s another rule: You never have
too much cam. Especially in a Hemi. The whole motor is
powdercoated in candy brandywine. It came that way
when Roy bought it, and he thought it looked kinda weird
when he fi rst installed it. But after tons of driving, it’s
beginning to develop a proper layer of grunge.
