That’s Crazy

always be there to support me, to encourage me, and to continue to

          love me so unconditionally.

My cousin says my father did not do me service because he

treated me as a fragile princess; meaning he never allowed me to suffer

or see the bad of the world. Even though he was a big police officer,
he was as soft as a teddy bear. I never saw Daddy arrest anyone. We
slept with our doors unlocked and often left the keys in the car

overnight. Daddy always did his best to fix my problems so that I

would not feel any pain. I did not have a sense of fear, especially
having grown up in Kinston with such a free spirit. So, arriving in

Washington, DC, I had no clue there were bad people. I did not have
the skills to recognize bad people. Just as Big Poppa, I always saw the

good in people and justified their bad behavior. I truly felt I had no
right to judge anyone’s poor behavior. I just wanted to help and free

          my people.

I always like to say during the first part of my life I grew up in

Kinston, but during my adult life I grew up in DC. I was a young girl
from the south coming to Washington, DC and believing the world

          was mine.

After being in Washington, DC for only one month I found my
first job as an event planner with Smith and Associates, a contractor
for the Federal government. My first supervisor was a wonderful man,

who trained me on how to become a professional conference
