corporate America in the North. I ended up being placed on probation
because of this woman.
I had caught her in a lie in front of our supervisor and she had
the nerve to stand in front of me as I was sitting in a chair and told
me, “F*#! you.” I remember getting up from my chair and standing
over both of them and telling the top supervisor I had to leave because
I would truly end up slapping the eyebrows of this little 4-foot B*#! I
was then placed on probation for thirty days by the owner of the
company. They felt I was bucking the system because I wanted her
job, I just knew that she was manipulative, and I wanted no part of
her. The whole time I was on probation, she would purposely do
things to provoke me such as, asking me to move boxes from her
office, which was a complete insult to me, I felt I was back in the
South, trying to comply to master.
I left after five years with that company, having obtained a
position as a senior conference manager. I knew I would never get to
a higher position because of the bad blood that had now been
established. I felt bad about leaving because I had made many of my
co-workers my extended family, and we are still friends today. They
were my support system and groomed me from a country girl into a
professional event planner. Christine realized that I did not have a
clue. I was wearing play clothes to work, which included my favorite
pair of flip flops for each outfit. Christine said I looked like a "Bama"
which was a term a lot of the black folks in DC used to use as to mean,
you are from the "country". She pulled me to the side and told me I
