the company. When I returned to work, the supervisor continued to
ensure that I did not receive the necessary support that I required.
The weekend before the conference, I went to my immediate
supervisor on that Friday and asked her permission to take off the
weekend, because I knew the week of the conference would be long
hours and I was still trying to recuperate. She had the nerve to tell me
I could not take the weekend off. That pushed me right over the edge,
flashbacks to my roots in the South. I told that woman, "I am taking
the weekend off despite not having your permission because even the
slaves on the plantation had the weekend off."
I was so upset, I went back to my office and called daddy and told
him I needed to quit because these people were crazy. Daddy said, as
always, “Go ahead baby, do what you have to do. I have your back.”
It was all I needed. I started packing my little things that I had brought
over and went to tell the supervisor that I was quitting, it was over.
Now they were in a dilemma. That was when I began to
understand about positioning myself in power. I was the only one who
had been in close relationship with the client and had all the details for
the highly visible event starting that Monday. The supervisor sent in
her flunkies to try and talk me out of leaving, and I was like where
were you when I kept begging for help. I decided I still had my
reputation to protect and I would manage the event. The event went
over without a hitch.
