That’s Crazy
At this point, sister gal turned into the exorcist, I could see her
head spinning in 360 degrees and just waiting for the split green pea
soup to be spit in my direction. This is where I saw how ruthless
corporate America was. The new vice president took my supervisor's
positions right from under her and promoted me to Conference
Director with another fifteen-thousand-dollar salary increase.
Needless to say, it was a very uncomfortable environment to work in
and I felt very bad for my supervisor, but, on the other hand, I was
given a once in a lifetime opportunity.
In the operational manual, we had directed all-conference
services performed throughout the company on the various contracts
that would now come through our division. We centralized all the
events for the company and the only fault with the plan was that I had
to deal with other conference managers on each of the contracts and
had no authority over their performance. We pretty much served as a
processing center. It taught me how to pay attention to systems and
processes.
It was also a fun job. Regarding one particular contract, we had
to pull together a series of eight regional workshops consisting of two
hundred people each and some of the workshops were scheduled
consecutively across the U.S. When one workshop was ending, we had
teams preparing for the other workshops at the official home site,
everyone stayed on the road for approximately eight weeks. These
workshops were geared towards Latinos and African Americans,
AIDS and Substance Abuse.
