because she had this horrible whiny voice. Listening to her was like
somebody running their nails down a blackboard!
The other white senior female was hired to oversee the national
conferences with our division supporting her. She also became my
pain in the butt. She would have me draft up letters and information
sheets and when I presented it for review, she would redo the whole
thing. It got to the point where I told her that if she knew what she
wanted to include in the letters and fact sheets not to waste my time
drafting those documents. After the workshops ended, I had minimal
contact with her.
The whinny one had gotten in good with upper management but
was also performing poorly on a new contract the company had won.
The client could not get along with her and was threatening to end the
contract. The company placed me as the Project Director and that is
when I truly began to learn how to play the game.
Understanding that I had to step into a situation where the client
was already angry with the company and I had to turn on the "Big
Poppa" charm to turn them around. It did not take long to rebuild the
trust, just by performing and responding to their every need. I did not
know at the time that the contract would become my walking power.
It was originally a one-year contract for 1 million dollars. The company
had grown so quickly and had graduated out of the minority set aside
program and was no longer eligible to keep the contract. The contract
had to go to another firm in the program. I recognized another
