government. There was a lot of stress because the company was
constantly robbing Peter to pay Paul. I did not realize how fortunate I
had been working for the other three companies, which were
financially stable. I had been completely removed from their financial
operations and did not understand how much was truly involved. This
company gave me firsthand experience of the operations of a small
business.
When I started, I had to hire staff for the contract, and I hired the
conference planner who had traveled with me from the first company.
I still needed to staff up with an additional assistant. I began the
interviews with my network of former employees who had been
displaced. I remember my future partner, Jerome, saying to me as I
was leaving, “Don’t forget about a brother.” I was still on my mission
program to help a brother, help a sister; always fighting for the
underdog and the cause.
My mission had always been about training my people as I
climbed the ladder. I felt it would take longer for an unemployed
brother to get hired than a sister, so I took a chance on Jerome and
that was the beginning of my dysfunction. I called him, interviewed
and hired him as another conference manager. Jerome was
approximately 5 feet 5 inches and weighed about 260 pounds, he was
previously a bodybuilder and his ego and arrogance were as big as his
stocky body. I had heard rumors from former employees at KMP that
he was a womanizer, a playa, and had affairs with several of the women
