That’s Crazy
We were in the third year of the contract from KMP and things
began to get crazy with the company's finances. It had gotten to the
point where we could not book hotel space because the company had
not paid their bills. The meeting participants were not getting their
reimbursement checks and were constantly calling me about the status
of their payments.
I knew the contract was ending and I began to shop for another
firm to direct the contract too for my clients. At the same time, I began
feeding information to my client about the company's financial status
because I knew my loyalty was now with my client and I was not sure
how much longer Cox could survive. The company's finances had
gotten so bad that one hotel that we used often, and that we thought
we had good credit with, set us up. The hotel allowed me to book the
meeting space and sleeping rooms for 200 people. The day the
meeting was supposed to start, they allowed our participants to check
into their sleeping rooms, which gave them the power. By mid-
morning, the hotel contacted me and informed me that if the company
did not bring a $12,000 check to them by the end of the day, they
would begin to charge the meeting participants' credit cards. I knew
all hell was getting ready to break loose if the hotel began to charge
those participants credit cards. I contacted my client and told him what
was going on. We developed a scheme where he would contact the
owner but not reveal the fact that I had been informing him of the
company's financial situation.
