“My help a brother, help a sister program”, I felt I could groom him.
During that period was also when I began to learn about city
folks. Back then I did not realize there was a difference in city black
people and southern black people.
I also met my newfound friend, Shannon, who was the
receptionist, at Cox and Associates. Shannon was short, and stocky,
and light-complexioned with a unique look; she was not a bad looking
girl. She was from Camden, New Jersey and I thought she was very
bright and a hard worker. She was the only child and had health issues;
we later discovered she had lupus, an illness that affects the
autoimmune system. She had the type of personality that kept
everyone in the office laughing; at the same time, there was something
sinister behind her personality. No one from upper management cared
for her, I did not understand why. Again, I'm still in my help a brother,
help a sister mode and fighting for those whom I thought were labeled.
Shannon was always scheming and plotting something and not good!
Shannon always had confusion going on at the front desk, we had also
connected with another sister working there, Diane, and we all became
close.
We all used to get a laugh at Shannon as she plotted against her
immediate supervisor. One plot involved trying to have an affair with
her supervisor's husband. As the receptionist, she was on the front
line, receiving the calls and she began flirting with the supervisor's
