black firm had won the contract to plan events for their communities.
I understood where they were coming from.
I remember being in a pre-meeting for the national conference,
and they started speaking in Spanish about the details of the
conference. They were not aware we had a brother from one of the
islands who understood Spanish, he responded to them in Spanish
letting them know they were not going to talk about us and we had to
proceed to plan the national conference.
Working with the Latino community, I saw they had the same
issues the blacks had within our community. When I was traveling
across the regions, I saw that in each region the Latinos had different
issues. Like black people, they believed where you were born
determined your economic class. The Cubans were the upper echelon
of the Latinos while the Mexicans were considered low on the totem
pole. These conferences were a place for the Latino community to be
heard by the government. They were having a movement just as the
blacks had in the '60s.
After successfully surviving those workshops, I was back on
home base and having to deal with the internal office politics. I had to
deal with two white females who were senior conference managers.
One of them was supposed to have my position, but she went on
maternity leave and things were moving fast in our division, so my
promotion occurred while she was out having her baby. So when she
returned my hell began, I hated it when she came into my office
